How to Calculate Ancestor Blood Percentage
a tutorial using your registered animal's pedigree

To calculate the percent of an animal's particular bloodline, you will add the total blood percentage values of that one particular ancestor. On first glance it might appear technical and complicated. But it isn't. Each generation of your animal's pedigree provides a percentage--that you enter as a numerical value. You can see the pattern is half the value of the previous generation:

  1.   1st generation = 50% each
  2.   2nd generation = 25% each
  3.   3rd generation = 12.5% each
  4.   4th generation = 6.25% each
  5.   5th generation = 3.125% each
  6.   6th generation = 1.5625% each
  7.   7th generation = .78125% each
  8.   8th generation = .390625% each
  9.   9th generation = .1953125% each
  10. 10th generation = .09765625% each

Let's say you own a lovely creature named Effigy. You want to calculate her percentage of the renowned "Effin bloodline". We will use Effigy's extended pedigree to do that. We will add together all the percentages of this illustrious ancestor appearing in her pedigree--the famous ancestor that her bloodline is so coveted for: "Sir Effin Riddick Ullyses". To do this, first, find or put together an extended pedigree that goes back far enough in time to when the famous ancestor was born. This can take several generations, depending upon how long ago the famous ancestor was born. Then set up a chart like this to organize all the percentage amounts of Sir Effin found in each generation of Effigy's pedigree:

Each time "Effin" appears in Effigy's pedigree, it is sub-totaled in each generation's column. Add the values in columns where Effin appears more than once. These are your sub-totals for each column. Then total all the column values to calculate Effigy's bloodline percentage. That's it. You now have the percentage of that particular bloodline, for your animal.

Remember, each generation (column) in Effigy's pedigree provides a percentage value, so in each column, you count how many times Effin appears in that generation, and tally the sum in the bottom row. So, let's say Effigy's pedigree has "Effin" one time in the 4th and 5th generation, twice in the 7th generation, once in the 8th generation and four times in the 9th generation. , it would be: 6.25 + 3.125 + (2 x .78125) + .390625 + (4 x .1953125) = 12.109375 or 12.12% "Effin" blood.

Effigy has 12.109375 % or "over 12% Effin blood in her pedigree"

There is no single concrete definition, but Effigy could probably be considered "Effin bred" if she is > 10% Effin. If less than 10% Effin, Effigy would more likely be called "Effin influenced." Different breeders,fertile mule breeds, registries and associations will vary somewhat in semantics. More debatable, genetics in real life, and probabilities, by definition, refuse to remain centrally located in the bell curve. Effigy might have inherited copious amounts of Effin's finest dominant genes every single time Effin appeared in her pedigree. Or not: She may not have inherited much, or any of his goodness.

Qualities shared among the best breeders include:

  • They understand how genetics work in theory and in real life.
  • They understand the inheritance of both dominant & recessive genes.
  • They understand prepotency.
  • They understand genotype, phenotype, linebreeding, inbreeding.
  • They realize that straight flushes and fertile mules exist in the real world.
  • They search, find, acquire, breed and reproduce rare, fine, stacked genetics.

Below is a 6 generation pedigree. The 1st generation is an animal's parents, the 2nd generation is the animal's grandparents, and so on. When calculating the percentage of one bloodline, all instances of that ancestor must appear in your animal's pedigree. If you are researching a very old bloodline, and it doesn't, you will have to put together a longer pedigree. It is worth mentioning here that an animal can have a pedigree that reflects a high percentage of 2 or even more bloodlines, or, it may not contain a high percentage of any single bloodline. That is the indication of whether an animal is a product of outcrossed bloodlines (NOT the same as crossbred, mind you), or linebreeding or inbreeding.
